Museum Night in Austria: discover the culture of the country where your new chapter begins

The Long Night of Museums brings Austrian music, art and history closer, giving new residents a chance to discover the culture of their new home.

Museum Night in Austria: discover the culture of the country where your new chapter begins

Moving to Austria brings many new experiences: a first job, a new language, different customs and getting to know a city that gradually becomes home. Visiting a museum can be a lovely first step towards discovering the country, its history and its people.

“ORF Lange Nacht der Museen” (ORF Long Night of Museums) offers precisely that opportunity. This cultural event took place on Saturday, 3 October 2026, for the 26th time.

From 6 p.m. until midnight, around 670 museums, galleries and cultural institutions in Austria and parts of neighbouring countries opened their doors. According to ORF's final report, the event attracted around 300,000 visitors.

Behind these figures lies a simple, beautiful idea: bringing culture closer to people and allowing them to experience it together.

Austrian tradition through music, art and stories

The programme in Vienna showed how many different stories can fit into a single cultural evening.

At Haus der Musik (House of Music), visitors could explore the world of sound and listen to works by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss. Austria's musical tradition became an experience to hear, feel and share.

Mozarthaus Vienna (Mozart's House in Vienna) offered tours of Mozart's only surviving Viennese apartment, where he lived from 1784 to 1787. Discovering places like this brings us closer to the era in which works still performed around the world were created.

At Jüdisches Museum Wien (Jewish Museum Vienna), the programme explored Jewish history, religion and tradition in Austria. KunstHausWien (Art House Vienna) provided an opportunity to discover Hundertwasser's art and contemporary themes linking people, nature and creativity.

These examples reveal the many layers of Austria's cultural heritage. Different communities, artistic movements and generations meet within it. Learning their stories helps us understand the country we live in today.

An opportunity for families and new residents

This year's event allowed visitors to explore participating institutions with a single ticket. Standard admission cost 19 euros, reduced admission 16 euros, and the regional ticket 7 euros, subject to specific conditions.

Admission was free for children up to age 12, and 270 museums in Austria prepared additional activities for children. The ticket also included selected transport options, including public transport within Vienna's core zone and dedicated event buses.

For people who have recently arrived in Austria, events like this can be a welcoming way to discover their new surroundings. A museum visit offers a conversation starter with colleagues and neighbours, an outing with the family and a chance to uncover the stories behind familiar buildings, street names and landmarks.

You do not need extensive knowledge of art. Choose something that interests you, such as music, history, nature or contemporary creativity, and start there.

If you are still learning German, check the museum's official website before visiting to see whether guides or content are available in a language you understand. For a family outing, look for children's programmes too, as discovering things together can help the whole family get to know their new city.
