Frequently asked questions
What are ZAB and DAB?
ZAB (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen) is Germany's Central Office for Foreign Education. It issues assessments of foreign university degrees and DAB statements on foreign vocational qualifications. The following questions explain these.
What is a ZAB degree assessment?
ZAB issues an assessment of a foreign university degree (Zeugnisbewertung), showing which level of education in Germany it corresponds to, such as a bachelor's or master's degree. This assessment can serve as proof of qualification for employment and in visa or residence procedures, but it does not replace the recognition required to work in regulated professions, where a specific authorisation to practise is required by law.
What is a DAB statement?
DAB (Digitale Auskunft zur Berufsqualifikation) is a digital statement on a foreign vocational qualification, also issued by ZAB. It is intended for vocational qualifications that are not university degrees. A positive DAB statement shows that the qualification is state-recognised in the country where it was obtained and that the training was equivalent in scope to at least two years of full-time vocational training. It serves as evidence in certain visa or residence procedures, but does not confirm equivalence to a German vocational qualification or replace the recognition process.
How do recognition, a ZAB assessment and a DAB statement differ?
Recognition of a professional qualification is a process handled by the responsible institution. A ZAB assessment concerns university degrees, while a DAB statement concerns vocational qualifications that are not university degrees. Neither replaces recognition where it is required. Can you promise that my qualification will be recognised?
No. The responsible institution assesses the qualification and decides on recognition. We prepare the documents and complete the application, then submit them to the institution after you sign.
What if the institution rejects the application or requires legal interpretation?
We do not provide legal assessments or prepare appeals. You need a lawyer in that situation.
What is the total cost?
Our fee is {price}. Translation, certification and institutional fees depend on the documents. You receive a cost estimate before we engage a translator, and we only start once you accept it.
